From a young age, Joni was immersed in the world of working breeds, surrounded by the likes of German Shepherds and Rottweilers, thanks to her father's passion for training protection dogs.

This early exposure ignited a lifelong fascination with understanding the intricate ways these intelligent dogs learn and bond with their handlers. Despite her involvement, the true depth of this connection remained a mystery, until a spaniel entered her life. It was this moment that sparked a profound realisation: these dogs are not just pets - they are bred with a purpose.

This led Joni into the world of gundogs -a journey that would eventually inspire the creation of Fern & Fireside Dog Training, based in East Sussex.

As Joni’s journey with gundogs unfolded, she encountered a significant gap in the training options available - nothing catered to her desire to nurture a gundog as both a companion, a pet, and a working dog. As her family of dogs grew to seven cocker spaniels and a border collie, it was clear that there was a need for training that could bridge the gap, providing a solution for owners like her, who wish to enjoy the intrinsic qualities of their gundogs and working breeds of dogs within the home.

The Accredited Pet Gundog Instructor Programme was the missing link she had been searching for - a programme that embraced the philosophy that a gundog can indeed be a brilliant companion in the home.
