Brogan Ryan APGI

Brogan Ryan APGI

Based in the heart of the Cotswolds, Brogan’s Compass Dog Services aims to enrich the lives of dogs – and their human companions – across Cheltenham and the surrounding area.

Ever since she was young, Brogan dreamt of working with dogs and strived to make their lives better. As a teenager in Mullingar, Ireland, she volunteered at a dog rescue centre, preparing food, maintaining facilities, while providing the dogs with exercise and affection, and even assisting with vaccinations. With upwards of 70 dogs at any given time, it was the Spaniels and Labradors, the gundog breeds, which quickly became her favourites.

This passion carried through into adult life and, once settled in Cheltenham, Brogan began to volunteer with Angels for Animals Foundation, a foreign-rescue charity based in Gloucestershire. In 2021 she setup her own dog walking and pet sitting business on the side of her career in image licensing and archive management. The business soon grew to the point that it enabled her to follow her dream of working with dogs full time.

The acquisition of a Cocker Spaniel called Jarvis was followed by a deep delve into the world of gundog training. Working with gundog trainers with the aim of providing the best life for Jarvis, she was amazed by the intelligence of gundog breeds, their hard-working nature, and the bond which forms between the dog and the handler when we provide our dogs with an outlet for their instinctual needs.

Becoming an APGI, Brogan has sharpened her knowledge and handling methods through 18 months of rigorous training, independent research, and formal assessment. She is a skilled and knowledgeable handler, with demonstrable command on the field, whose love for gundogs and admiration of their talents shines through in her daily practice.

As an instructor, Brogan aims to share and pass on her knowledge and experience with other owners of gundogs and gundog crosses so that they too can experience the joy of enriching their dogs’ lives and seeing them do what they were bred to do.

Brogan Ryan APGI
